Don't Ask Me Why

Don't ask me why
my child has spots of blood on her shirt
Sometimes she won't stay still long enough
for the bleeding to stop

Don't ask me why
my eyes follow her wherever she goes
I worry that I might miss
the telltale sign of a low

Don't ask me why
I sometimes can't string a sentence together
My brain is too fried
by counting carbs to talk

Don't ask me why
I have these dark circles under my eyes
Waking to check your child
during the night will do that to you

Don't ask me why
I carry a bagful of strange devices and foods
They might just save
my child's life one day

Don't ask me why
my child has bruises on her arm
You'd think I'd be better at this by now
but some days I still do it wrong

Don't ask me why
tears well in my eyes for seemingly no reason
It's this disease
It overwhelms me sometimes

Just let me know
you're here and you care
Besides a cure
that's all I want

  3. You are so funny Maria! Thanks for being here... it helps me fight the sadness, knowing that others are standing with me.

I wrote it last night as I tried to fall asleep. I didn't write it down and hoped that I would remember it the next day and I think for the most part I did. I always do my best writing at night for some reason.

  4. Did you write that? I assumed that you found it on some diabetes support website until I got to the bottom and there wasn't a name. :)

    Very heartfelt and real...

It reminds me of this quote I happened upon last night:

"I want to know if you can sit with pain, mine or your own, without moving to hide it or fade it or fix it"
