When is a diet drink, not a diet drink? When the restaurant you're eating at has screwed up. Not that Elise is drinking anything but water these days, but I thought this was important to pass along.
Apparently, people that work in restaurants sometimes either just don't listen when people order a diet drink for their child, or the wrong drink container is connected to the diet line.
So what you can do is carry a package of diastix (test sticks that are used to test for sugar in urine), and put a drop of the drink onto the stick. If the pad changes colour, you'll know that there is sugar in your not-so-diet drink.
Crafty, no?
I tell you what, I can't count how many times my sister has been given a non-diet drink over the years. I think it's like people (waiters, waitresses) are programmed not even to hear the word "diet" when it comes from a child/teen especially a skinny one. So when she'd get her drink, she'd say to me, "I don't think it's diet, try it" and I can tell that it isn't.
ReplyDeleteWhat's funny is that my husband (who is always trying to lose some weight) has ordered regular drinks, and when they come back to see if he wants another they've said, "Okay, that was diet, right?" Uh, no...haha!
Genius!
ReplyDeleteYep! You can also test it with a meter, it will say Lo if it is Diet! Watch out for IHOP! We once got syrup that I swore could not have been "sugar free"!!!! Maddison was HI for quite awhile after her "SF syrup" and I betcha they refilled the bottle with regular syrup!
ReplyDeleteYeah...we got a "diet" soda at a movie once...
ReplyDeleteNOT PRETTY!!!!
These are things that I would not even think about because we have not experienced it yet with Cara. That is why it is so important to be connected to other T1 children and their parents. Thanks for the TIPS!!
ReplyDeleteI always double check Jada's drink and several times it's been wrong! What's nice though, is that Jada doesn't always want soda when we are out as a family- she's usually a water or milk girl- which is just fine with me! Good tip Joanne! :)

ReplyDeleteThanks so much for that tip! We’ve already been to a few restaurants where she had to have a diet soda because with the food she wanted there wasn’t enough carbs left for milk or juice. And I drilled it into our servers that she was diabetic and NEEDED a diet and I still tasted it before I let her touch it. I’ll surely be getting some of those strips so I can be certain!
ReplyDeleteI'm Riley's official taster. I ALWAYS take a sip of his drink first to make sure it's diet, even when I fixed it myself. Once I fixed a drink and it said it was diet but when I tasted it, it was not diet.
ReplyDeleteWhen Riley gets older the diastix is a great idea.
As an adult with Type I, I've discovered that another great way to figure out if a drink is diet or not is to stick your fingertip in it (with clean hands, of course!) and let your finger air dry. If your finger is sticky, then there's sugar in the drink, but if it's not sticky, then it's a diet drink.
