I've been so caught up in getting the shirts ordered, I haven't blogged about anything else. Time for a regularly scheduled post in which I complain a lot. Ready? GO!
Seriously, we are STILL dealing with night time issues, and I am so tired I feel like I am going to fall over at any minute. The smart thing would be for me to lay down and nap while Elise also naps (which would be right now), but then when would I complain? Actually, I don't really like to nap during the day, I always wake up feeling worse.
We had ONE good night, where Elise's BG was in the 170s all night long, but otherwise it's been the same thing over and over. Her bedtime check she's between 90 and 130. We give 15g of carbs (whole wheat bread, soynut butter and banana mashed with avocado), and then 3 units of NPH. At least, right now it's 3 units. I think that's going to change tonight.
At midnight check she's usually in the low 200s. By 3:00 am, she's in the upper 200s, to lower 300s. This morning she woke up at 350 with 1.1 ketones.
To make matters worse, she's STILL waking and crying during the night. And it's killing us.
We're now giving her shot and snack at the same time (used to be 45 minutes apart), and the first night we did that, she had the 170s through the night. But then the next night it was back to the same old, same old.
I think our next course of action is to either lower the snack amount, or up the insulin. The last time we upped the insulin to 3.5, we had a low at about 1:00 am. Maybe less carbs will do it. The one time we tried to give her some fast-acting with her snack (only 1 unit), we battled lows all night.
What really gets me is that her daytime numbers are wonderful. After an initial wake-up where she's high, her numbers range from 90-160 during the day. Why can't we figure out the night stuff?
And how long will it be before I'm certifiably crazy due to lack of sleep?
I dont know much about the night time stuff cause my son did not do this at night his was during the day maybe someone else will be able to answer the night time stuff . My sons issues were during the day . It could be the time and stuff that you doing the snack and the shot it could be alot of things but the snack and the shot could be the source of the problem I mean the spacing of those .well I hope you get it under control and hugs and get some rest .
ReplyDeleteAll I can do is promise you this won't last forever. I know DUH. But sometimes it just seems like there is no light at the end of the tunnel. I think you're on the right track. You'll figure it out!
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry you're so tired! I HATE not sleeping. But I love to hear your complaints! This is where we are allowed go tell it like it is! Not just say "things are fine".
ReplyDeleteWhat is NPH? Is it like Lantus (24 hour insulin)? If so... We had trouble with giving Ave lantus before bed bc she would go low overnight. We tried giving her that dose with dinner or around 5-6. The nurse suggested we try that so that it would peak ( even though it's technically not supposed to peak) right before bed. Just a thought - don't know if it would help! Hoping it gets better soon!
I'm sorry you are so tired. It's like having a newborn again! I wish I could help you but I haven't a clue what to tell you. But - I think I would lower the carbs before I upped the NPH.
ReplyDeletePoor baby. I hope you get it worked out quickly so that you can all get some rest.
Call me if you want to vent tomorrow!
Thanks for the info! I have a very limited knowledge of other ways to treat than what we do. I like learning about what others do and what works! For instance, we learned in the hospital to treat lows with fast acting carbs - like glucose tabs, juice or smarties, etc - I don't remember learning anything about things that are not candy. But think we may try the PB cracker thing that others do! Just another awesome thing about blog world!! I learn so much! Thanks!!!
ReplyDeleteI hate blood sugar issues that you can figure out. HATE THEM! They are so frustrating. I don't have any advice for ya other than to say HUGS and I am here for you if you need to vent.
ReplyDeleteHi - I have been reading your blog for awhile but this is my first comment. I am dealing with a similar issue with my 10yr old daughter dx 6/09. We do lantus at dinner - and by bed time she is at the low end of her range so I give her a snack. Then at 3am she is in the 300s. I keep lowering the carb value of the snack and it does nothing to the numbers - she usually wakes up at 250 or so. I was going to up the lantus tonight and check her more often (alredy check at midnight and 2:30 or 3:00 depending on pattern. Do you correct in the night? I don't, I just can't bring myself to wake her up for a shot - can't wait for a pump.
ReplyDeleteShe is in the middle of a growth spurt I think and I am wondering if that is what is going on - it just started about a week or so ago.
@ JillR - We use NPH at night... I have no experience with Lantus, but I've heard how hard it can be to find a dose that works.
ReplyDeleteWe don't correct at night, except if she is super high (350+), but she's usualy awake and crying if she's that high.
Growth spurts can be the worst because the wreak havoc on Elise's numbers... they go crazy all across the board, high AND low! Good luck with the pump, I've heard they are so great, we're just not ready for it yet.
