This little piggy

My husband was talking to a D-Mom the other day who, when she found out we use Elise's toes to check her BG sometimes, was quite taken aback. She told him that her daughter's endo said that the foot was "sacred" and you should never test on the toes.

They are actually Elise's preferred testing site, and much easier to access for night time checks, since Elise likes to sleep on her hands (I think a trait only D-kiddos have). Plus I like to give her little fingers a break because there is just not a lot of real estate there.

I'm curious, what do YOU do?

  1. We were never told not to check Tristan's toes. We were told toes or fingers are fine. When the opportunity is there, we will check Tristan's toes. :)

  2. So funny you bring this up! My boys NEVER let us test their toes...and at night they would bolt awake if we tried.

But last week we were at my parents and L was laying on his hands watching tv. He wouldn't give My SIL his hands, so she said, "Fine, I'll test your toes!" And he said. "Good! Test my toes!" And she did, and he said, "That didn't hurt!" At least one of my guys is open to it. :)

Doc always said toes or fingers...it didn't matter.
(And all my boys sleep on their hands...you are so right!)

  3. My parents felt the same way about my fingers and used my toes at night (my hands were under my pillow). We talked to my doctor about it and he said not to do it. Being a diabetic infections are more harmful. So since then, never on my toes. What I find that works is just constant rotation of fingers and different spots. Also a lot of lotion helps.

  4. We where told only check on fingers, we really never asked why, we just nodded out heads, yes sir, and really never thought about trying her toes??

and Cara does sleep on her hand too. The fingers and hands must need a little lov'en to sometimes, just a little cuddle time at night!

  5. I have used toes occasionally. We were told toes are fine but because of the nature of where feet live (on the ground and in shoes) they were more prone to getting infected.

My dad also used his ear lobe once. :) Then he looked like we pierced his ear for a few days before it healed. Zane thought it was pretty funny. :)

  6. I like Charlotte's toes for night checks because I know her toes are clean, and it gives her poor fingers a break.

  7. We were told toes were fine too...I like to give her fingers a break. They already look pretty banged up! If we do toes, it is at night though.

  8. We were told toes are fine too. We use toes at night sometimes. Another mom told me they weren't accurate so I checked and got the exact same reading as I did on her finger, pretty accurate to me :)

  10. We were told fingers at the hospital and that's what we do. She sleeps in socks anyway...
Interestingly, at dx in the peds office they checked her toes. Once. Then came back to say that they weren't sure about the machine or something... And checked again. Toe again.
Now I know the machine wasn't broken - they just had never seen it say HI before.

  11. I WISH Jada would let us use her toes...but she ALWAYS wakes up at night when I try. I'm glad Elise offers up those piggies for you...I sure wish Jada would!

  12. They used Nate's toes when we were at Children's Dallas for dx. We use his toes at night but he doesn't like them during the day.

  13. Liam does sleep on his hands. What do you know? :) The feet are too ticklish to do at night, but we've tried it before.

  14. I've never heard of doing toes before. I wish my parents knew that when they checked me in the middle of the night.
But I actually remember in the middle of a soccer practice I was low so I checked, and my friends' grandmother told me that they used to check using their earlobes. Is it just me, or does that sound downright painful? But I never knew I could check toes! :P
